Pigtails?

This post is inspired by something I saw last night. This lady in one of my courses was sporting a very unfortunate set of pigtails. This lady is old enough to be my mother and sports a very short curly style. Now let me start by saying, on little girls I think pigtails are THE cutest style. However, I just really don't think it is OK for women to wear pigtail.

To emphasize I tried to take a cellphone picture of this hairstyle, but I couldn't do it conspicuously. So I googled it. I couldn't find what I was looking for their either. I am not creating this post to criticise or belittle anybody! We all have our reasons for how we choose to style our hair, I just think some choices are better than others...

Let us turn to the celebrities here:

Beautiful women with beautiful hair, but is this a good choice for the red carpet??
Absolutely adorable:
Not so much:
This is appropriate:
This really, really is not:

How cute is she?
Is this okay?
Are braid more appropriate for older girls?
I don't know. I just don't get it. So I turn to you guys:

Do you disagree? Do you think pigtails are appropriate on women? At what age does it become unacceptable? Please comment, I REALLY want to hear your thoughts.

just a heads up, don't google pigtails with your children in the room... (GROSS!)

If you are older than 10 the pig tails must be below the ears in my opinion. and more in the back than the sides.

I don't know,I used to think that pigtails on women looked a bit silly but I just realized that I'm a grown-up now too and I'm still wearing them(I'm 22 :P).Maybe it has more to do with face shape or something-my mom still wears pigtail braids and looks great in them, although she's in her fifties.
I don't think that Tori Spelling looks good in anything,by the way(sorry :)).

I would have to agree with you guys that low ponytails/braids are more mature. I also agree that the appropriatness can be somewhat individual, depending on face shape or somthing, because some people can pull it off after childhood.

Anonymous#1- thank you for the links, the article was very interesting!

I think pig tails are acceptable on older mom women maybe grandma's are a bit too old. I think it depends on how you feel that day. If ur feeling fun then go with something cut in pig tails.

I saw an article on the msn homepage just a month or so ago on this subject. If women wear pigtails they should be low and more towards the back. High and and in front should be reserved for kids. I sometimes do my hair in pigtails that are low and to the back and I think it is fun and nice for a change.

Okemi- I really like what you said, I think when it really comes down to it, our hair styles are a reflection of how we are feeling. And if your feeling fun and cute, why not express that?

Becki- I agree, low and towards the back is better. Its nice to know even simple pigtails can be changed to work for everyone!

"Appropriate"?? Appropriate is what you feel comfortable in. Who is to say how a woman should wear her hair at any given age? There is no point in a woman considering others' opinions when styling her hair--she'll never please everyone and why the heck should she? Do you want to wear ponytails, pigtails, pink hair? At 20, 30, 40, 60?? Well there you go. It's appropriate for you if you want to. ;-)

Well, it's a personal thing. my girlfriend (my age, late 20's) can totally get away with it. But I have SO much hair, when I have pig tails, it looks like two huge sausages coming out of my head. I don't think it's a age thing, it's a person to person thing.

Totally disagree with this.

I've always thought that people should be express themselves any way they want to without society trying to decide what's "cute" or "appropriate".

We all grow up so fast as it is and this world isn't growing any younger. I say wear the pigtails as high or as low as YOU want to, and enjoy yourself!
